What is Compounding?

Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing customized medications to meet the specific needs of an individual patient. Approximately 80% of all prescriptions were compounded until the 1950’s when pharmaceutical companies began producing prescription and over the counter drugs in large quantities. Compounded products have seen a resurgence since the 1990’s as physicians and patients realized that this one size fits all approach does not meet the needs of some individuals.

Some of the patients who benefit from compounded products are:

  • Children who resist treatment because of the taste of the medication
  • Elderly patients who may have difficulty swallowing tablets and capsules
  • Patients concerned with potential side effects (such as stomach upset) or allergic reaction (gluten intolerance) to commercially prepared medications
  • Individuals requiring an alternative dose that is not offered commercially
  • Patients in need of a particular medication that is out of stock or no longer available

As the need for individualized therapy has grown, compounds have regained popularity. Ask one of our pharmacists or your healthcare provider if this is an option for you.

A prescription from a licensed practitioner is required for compounded medications.
